To the editor:
Five 6-week-old female kittens weighing 1 pound each were abandoned in the scrub along Manheim Road. The only reason they're alive is because passersby fed them. By the time we came across the poor creatures, they had been in the wild for 4-5 days.
A neighbor adopted two of the kittens and because we were concerned about wildlife being attracted by the food, my husband and I brought the remaining kittens home. Since there is a non-profit agency on the island purporting to help cats, we called them for assistance. They had no interest in helping and neither did the agency off-island. We can't bring ourselves to take the kittens to the animal shelter so we're hoping that a cat lover will adopt one. We have two big dogs so keeping three cats is too much for us.
Dr. Kendra Techeira at the Pine Island Animal Clinic gave them a full checkup. The kittens are malnourished and their eyes are sore due to insects but they're responding well to antibiotics and doing really great overall.
