Ladies of the Elks donate $8,000

Due to a very successful season, the Ladies of the Elks were able to donate $8,000 to various organizations as its end of year contributions.

Ladies of the Elks President Bonnie Kellen said she thought their season went exceptionally well.

"We had a sell out for everything we did," she said, adding that the maximum amount of tickets sold for each event was 120. "We hit that every time and we are delighted with that."

The Ladies of the Elks donated a total of $8,000 Wednesday, April 24 to the various organizations at the Elks Lodge.

Kellen said she wants to thank everyone who purchased tickets and attended their functions this past season.

"Thank you, we appreciate all of the people that supported our activities," she said.

A special thank you was also extended to the Ladies of the Elks members.

"Thank you to all the members who work so hard," Kellen said.

The F.I.S.H. general fund received $2,000 from the Ladies of the Elks April 24, as well as $1,000 for the school basket brigade program. The Pine Island Food Pantry received $2,400 and Lee County Recreation Department summer camp received $1,000. Pine Island Elementary School received $500 for their incentive program and $300 for their emergency shoe fund.

Kellen said the emergency shoe fund is for children that are very needy. She said if the teacher sees that a child needs a new pair of shoes they send them to the nurse, who supplies them with the correct size.

Last but not least, $500 was donated to Pine Island Elks Lodge Children's Therapy, $1,200 for their general fund and $100 for their golf tournament.

Kellen said although the Ladies of the Elks is a small group, they try to create programs that appeal to the communities different wants and needs as far as entertainment.

The Ladies of the Elks have already scheduled their five luncheon activities for next season. The first event, Fall Fashion Show, will be held Nov. 22; Jan. 23 will feature Crazy Carol for a comedy performance; Janina Bertolo will feature Cleopatra in her performance on Feb. 13; on March 6, a card party and luncheon will be held; and the Spring Fashion Show will be held March 27.
