Twenty-one years ago Ron and Sharon Janus purchased Malu-Lani Inn in Bokeelia and have done quite a bit of remodeling over the years to provide a tranquil space for visitors to stay.
The Janus decided to visit Pine Island more than 20 years ago after Ron had traveled to various places all over Florida for many years.
Ron said when he and Sharon got together, he took her to Sanibel and they decided to start looking to make an investment on a piece of property. That idea led them to Bokeelia, someplace they had never visited before.
Malu-Lani Inn, which is located at 7759 Bocilla Lane in Bokeelia, offers both apartments and a cottage for those who wish to stay on a tranquil piece of property while visiting the area.
"We loved it here immediately," Sharon said.
The following year the couple stayed at the inn and then purchased the property a year later.
"I loved the people and the place," she said of why they decided to invest in the property. "Everyone is so nice, everyone helps each other."
The couple now spends six months in Bokeelia and six months in Missouri. While they are gone, manager Kate Derby takes care of the property.
"She is wonderful," Sharon said of Derby. "She would do anything for anybody and doesn't want anything in return."
Malu-Lani Inn offers four apartments, which are 1,000 square feet in size, as well as a 650-square-foot cottage. Visitors can stay at the inn daily for $135, with a two-day minimum; weekly for $875 and monthly for $2,500.
The apartment building was built in the 1960s, Ron said, adding that it is a very sound proof structure.
"This is a real good building," he said.
The apartment includes a bedroom with a queen-size and twin-size bed, as well as a twin-size bed outside of the bedroom. There is also a living room and full-size kitchen equipped with everything needed.
The cottage has a bedroom and living room, as well as a white kitchen that overlooks the water.
The property also includes a boat ramp and docks for those who would like to bring their boat with them. Jugg Creek, which provides safe inland waters, is located behind the inn, offering a great place to go kayaking, fishing and boating.
Sharon said they also have seven royal palms in the back of the property, as well as tables and chairs for guests to enjoy.
The couple hosts cocktail and dinner parties outside while the weather is nice, along with karaoke nights to get everyone together to have a good time.
Sharon said this has been the best year, in terms of bookings, that they have had in a couple of years.
"We feel pretty thankful," she said.
Sharon said they have a lot of return guests that come every year; one group is a fishing club that has booked rooms for the past 20 years.
She encourages those interested in renting a space for next year to make their reservations today by calling 239-283-9309 or 208-651-4341.
