As the nation celebrated the 2013 inauguration of President Obama, Pine Island residents Joe and Laura Hernandez watched their son, U.S. Army CPT Matthew Hernandez, call his unit to "order" as Obama walked into the area known as the crypt at the U.S. Capital.
They had the honor to attend the 2012 Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery for the "Laying of the Wreath" at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Hernandez serves as the platoon leader for the "Personal Escort to the President" and Company Executive Officer at the Honor Guard Co, 4/3 IN (The Old Guard)"Escort to the President."

Hernandez is a West Point graduate and Army Football Player.
He hopes to visit Pine Island and St. James City soon and visit Joe and Laura with some of his veteran officers who as "wounded warriors" would love to just go fishing.
Prior to serving with the Old Guard, Hernandez was a veteran of Afghanistan serving with the 82nd Airborne as an Infantry Officer earning the Bronze Star in a company that experienced many casualties.
