Frederick L. (Spider) Davis, 84, formerly of Orchard Park, N.Y., and currently of Pt. Abino, Ontario, Canada, and Bokeelia, died suddenly in Buffalo, N.Y.
Mr. Davis was born in Lockport, N.Y. and attended schools there. He graduated from Cheshire Academy and Hobart College. A veteran, he served is a U.S. Army tank battalion. He was marketing manager for Beal, McCarthy and Rogers, general manager of the Xcelite Division of Cooper Industries and formed S&B Industrial Sales and a successor company Davis-Callahan and Company, manufacturer's agencies, specializing in the sale of industrial supplies.
A lifelong sailor, Mr. Davis enjoyed racing and cruising a variety of sailboats in the Great Lakes and Caribbean. He belonged to the Buffalo Canoe Club, the Buffalo Yacht Club and was port captain of Buffalo for the Great Lakes Cruising Club. He was a director of the Buffalo Yacht Club and Rear Commodore of the Buffalo Canoe Club. He served on the Orchard Park Planning Board and was a member of long standing at Murray Hill Ski Club and the Buffalo Ski Club.

Mr. Davis edited and published Cruising Guides to Lake Erie and Ontario for many years and was very active and respected in sailing circles on the Niagara Frontier.
A bit of a character, he enjoyed unique people and places, having travelled extensively throughout Europe, Africa, North and South America, Australia, Asia, and the Antarctic, all seven continents.
He is survived by a son, Peter C. (Lynn) Davis of East Aurora; a daughter, Lissa D. (Thomas) Tepas of Buffalo; and three grandchildren, Chelsea, Jason and Alexander.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
