To the editor:
This letter is in response to the many irresponsible and deplorable attacks on the motives of the board members of the GPIWA. I take offense at the suggestion that their decision to fluoridate the island's water supply is driven by anything other than the best interest of the members of the association.
I have had the pleasure of knowing each of the current board members, as have many of you. They are volunteers for FISH and the Pine Island Food Pantry. They are senior members and Sunday school teachers for several churches on the island. They are officers of the Beacon of Hope, FISH, the PI Food Pantry and many other civic groups and associations. They are the respected owners and managers of several island businesses.
I'm sure almost everyone who reads this knows at least one board member and knows them for the kindness and charity they exhibit on a daily basis. Please see these attacks on their motives for what they are - desperate attempts at personal attacks where flawed logic has failed. Please join me in voting for fluoridation in the upcoming straw ballot. If you support this important advancement for our community, make sure to vote! We can move this forward, but only if you realize the importance of your vote and return your ballot expressing your support of your neighbors on the board and this decision to join the majority of Americans who already enjoy the proven benefits of fluoridated water.
