The third grade students at Pine Island Elementary School received a special gift from the Cape Coral Gold Coast Rotary Club Friday afternoon.
Shirley and Art Tribbie provided 48 English dictionaries and 12 Spanish dictionaries to the students to keep, as well as a few for the library at the school.
Shirley said this is the third year she and her husband have provided dictionaries for the students at Pine Island Elementary School. She said one of the Rotary Club's main goals is to provide opportunities for the children.
Shirley Tribbie, with the Cape Coral Gold Coast Rotary Club, handed out dictionaries to every third grade student at Pine Island Elementary School Friday afternoon.
"Everything we do focuses on the children's needs," Shirley said.
Once the students entered the classroom and sat on the floor, the Tribbies explained how the Rotary Club helps others internationally and locally.
Art explained to the students that the club provides dictionaries for all the third grade students in Lee County because they are starting to read better. With a dictionary in hand, he said the students can look up definitions if needed.
Once all of the students held their dictionary, Art challenged the youngsters to see who could find the word "ghost" the fastest since Halloween was a few days ago.
The kids immediately began turning pages to see who could find the word the quickest. Once the word was found, the student read the definition out loud to the rest of the students.
Shirley believes that the Rotary Club has provided dictionaries for the third grade students in Lee County for the last 10 years.
