A Cape Coral man was fatally injured Wednesday evening after the vehicle that he was driving veered off of Interstate 75 and collided with a tree.

Kenneth Paul Jones, 46, was traveling south on I-75 in a 2003 Kia Sorento when he drifted to the left at about 6 p.m. near mile marker 171. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Jones took evasive action.

He reportedly steered to the right, and the vehicle traveled across both southbound lanes of I-75 before entering the grass shoulder and a wooded area. The Kia struck a standing tree and rotated before coming to rest.

Officials reported that Jones sustained fatal injures in the accident.

Tests are pending to determine if he was under the influence.

The report states that Jones was wearing a seat belt during the crash.
