13th Annual Grouper Grab set for Aug. 17-18

July 25, 2012
Pine Island Eagle

The 13th Annual Grouper Grab fishing tournament will take place August 17 and 18 at Port Sanibel Marina. The Grab has a long history of being one of the top grouper tournaments in the state of Florida and this year will be no exception.

Several new sponsors have come on board, providing anglers with the ideal marina location, high end performance shirts and great hotel rates.

The Grouper Grab would like to specially thank Port Sanibel Marina the 2012 Presenting Level Sponsor. They offer a prime location and have been generous to provide dock slips free of charge to all registered teams. Another new sponsor is the Big Boat Sponsor - TUNASKIN. The gear they are providing to the anglers this year is top notch!

Blessings in a Backpack will be the primary beneficiary from the auction and raffle. The "Blessings in a Backpack" program steps-up where federal aid stops by feeding local school children on the weekend. For information visit

The mandatory Captains Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Friday evening August 17 at The Lighthouse Waterfront Restaurant. Anglers will receive tournament gear, the rules will be read, questions answered and appetizers served.

The Grab will have two divisions this year: The Big Boat Division (30 feet and

over) and the Small Boat Division (under 30 feet) making the field as fair as possible for all of those competing. The original format returns: three Grouper and two snapper per team will be weighed individually and the heaviest total weight of those five fish wins it.

Fishing will begin Saturday August 18 at 6 a.m. with all teams required to be back to the weigh station at Port Sanibel Marina by 6 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to come to the weigh station and check out all of the action.

The Awards Dinner will be held following the weigh-in. As the official weigh master weighs each teams catch; the grouper and snapper will be filleted and brought straight to the grill. While tournament participants enjoy dinner, officials will tally all scores. Tournament winners in both divisions will be announced, checks and

trophies awarded to the top teams along with bragging rights.

The entry fee is $700 per boat, which includes a four person team, any additional anglers are $100 each. For more tournament information visit or contact Ron Riley at or 239-671-9347 or Kristi Riley @ or 239-850-1707.

Special thank you to our presenting sponsor Port Sanibel Marina as well as our supporting sponsors Beasley Broadcasting, TUNASKIN, Colonial Roofing, Budweiser, Florida Weekly, Bahama Breeze Island Grille, Marine Max and Hampton Inn & Suites.
