To the editor:
Marblehead snowbirds Dave and Wanda Morehead, Tony and Darlene Novak, and Dan and Mary Ann Monak enjoyed another winter at St. James City on Pine Island. Our home away from home was spent mostly with our Pine Island friends at VFW Post 4353.
On Tuesdays, Paul and Patrice Lee and friends from Bay Point traveled from Fort Myers to join in the fun at the VFW's Pony Races and to enjoy the pizzas. Hosts Ron and Becky King, helped to make it a fun evening.
Mike and Debbie Garrard, stayed on the island for a few days, before joining Marty Roth at Fort Myers. They enjoyed the Sunday afternoon karaoke, bar burgers, and the Ohio State/Michigan State game; and meeting Buckeye and Spartan fans. Mike Garrard and Tony Novak were in good voice. Mike sang "Amy" and Tony sang "Kaw-Liga," while Dave Morehead flipped burgers. They were also happy to meet our dear friends Marlowe and Dodie Suter from Wisconsin. Their son, gold medalist Bob, played hockey with the winning USA in the 1980 Winter Olympics. We all cheered for their grandson Ryan, Bob's son; during the 2010 Winters Olympics. We cheered when the U.S. tied, but teared at the end. Ryan can be very proud of his silver medal, we are.
One pleasant afternoon was a corn hole party hosted by Tony and Darlene Novak, which brought back the memories of throwing a softball. The guests contributing to the food and fun afternoon were Jerry and Lee Congdon of Pine Island. Don and Rita Harris, Caroll Carpenter and Cora Christle from Michigan. Marblehead friends Jim and Carole Morey, Dick and Rosemarie Arn, Bob Orlando and Cheryl Furnace, Dave and Wanda Morehead, and Dan and Mary Ann Monak. Another great gathering was a Lake Erie fish fry hosted by Dave and Wanda Morehead with the same fun bunch. Jacquie Rode from Walbridge, Ohio, and Amy Wilson from Columbus were able to join us.
One Mexican Festival afternoon at the Pine Island VFW Post 4353 on Jan. 18 was a Marblehead Day gathering. Deane and Lynda Osborne traveled from Sarasota, Bruce Cohgan and Linda Montiss of Camp Runinmuck, arranged for Terry and Mary Helen Bareunig, Lee Voisard, Ed and Sandy Jones, Terry and Laura Kosmos, and Ron Sylvester and Hanna Boger to join the winter Pine Island residents Tony and Darlene Novak, Dave and Wanda Morehead, Ron and Thresa Karns, Dave and Dorothy Hall, Dave and Marian Glick, and Karl and Kathy Schroder. Lovely Jacquie Rode was there to make sure the Margaritas added to the fun afternoon reunion.
Our favorite time at VFW Post 4353 was Sunday afternoons. The beautiful voices of the Karaoke singers; begins with Bob (Elvis) Betz and his lovely wife Pat, from Ohio; I think "Kaw-Liga" was written for our Tony; "Ring of Fire" for Austin; "Funny Face" for Linda; and "Me and Jesus" for Anita and Dave. The most beautiful story-telling songs ever written were sung by Beckie, Stan, Bob, Al, Mary, Ron, Vickie, Rich, and our Dave, who helped Keith in the kitchen. I have to use first names only because one of my critics says my writings are too long, but our affection for Pine Island Friends is about 1,350 miles long. As this continues best wishes go out to those mentioned and to Steve and Carol, Bill and Juanita, Marlowe and Dodie, Sam and Penny, Shirley and Pete, Larry and Jean, Lloyd and Joanna, Jerry and Lee, David and Joyce, Olga, J.D. and Sheryl, Gary and Regina, Michael and Peaches, Jeri, Karen, Janelle, Bernadette, Terri, Tom, Earl, Charlie, Ethel, Ozzie, Barb and Jack. Sorry for missing many names. Congratulations to the new post officers for the ensuring year. Our prayers will continue to be with those who are ill.
Steve and Donna Ungvarsky arrived on the day before Dan and I had to unfortunately shorten our stay without saying goodbye to all our friends including the ones we've met during our 14 years at the KOA. Now that most of the 40 Marblehead Peninsula Snowbirds are back home; we are sorry our dear friends who usually come to Pine Island, could not join us this winter.
