To the editor:
Last week the county staff met with the residents of Island Harbors in Matlacha. I want to thank the staff (Bob Stewart) for conducting a meeting, which allowed the residents to voice their concerns on this plan. It was evident by the turnout the concern we have in going forward with a plan that will be more restrictive in future building designs. It would have been beneficial had those speaking identified whether they were residents of Island Harbors or elsewhere in the greater community.
It appears there are still three differences, which need to be addressed at the commissioners hearing May 22. They are really the most important restrictions: 1) the right to a variance, 2) the height of pool cage enclosures, and 3) the side set back footage. It appears that the county staff has rescinded the lot coverage reduction, which the Overlay Plan had originally tried to reduce from 40 percent to 33 percent. This may still be a concern and requires our close attention to the matter. You can get a current copy of the plan (revision May 9, 2012) by going to www.leegov.com/dcd/LDCAmendments or calling Nettie Richardson at 239-533-8786.
We are also grateful for the coverage that reporter Chuck Ballaro wrote in last week's Eagle. He basically covered our concerns and should have given Island Harbors residents a good overview of the many facets of this plan that will affect our property rights in the future.
