Black to perform at Bert’s Bar and Grill

A special performance will take place at Bert's Bar and Grill Saturday evening by a songwriter, performer and singer from the Tampa Bay area.

Julie Black and her band do festivals in the Tampa Bay area, along with larger concerts. She said they occasionally play at a few venues as well.

Black and her band have traveled south to Matlacha for more than five years to perform at Bert's. She said they have met a lot of nice people in Matlacha who are very open-minded and creative.

"We kind of fell in love," she said of the area, adding that they always have a good time when they travel to Matlacha. "We look forward to playing."

Black began writing music when she was 12 years old, a craft that has been her life purpose. She said she is a writer first and a performer and singer second.

"I come at things from a writer perspective," Black said, adding that she is a writer that stumbled on stage.

The music that she performs includes her perspective with an origin in blues music. She said she considers her music "blues with an open mind," that incorporates jazz, rock and soul.

"It is good music," Black said.

Although the songwriter entered the professional arena about six or seven years ago, the members of her band have been playing professionally their entire lives.

Black will perform at Bert's Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 p.m.

She encourages everyone to arrive early because there is almost always a packed house when they perform at Bert's.

"There is a lot of music loving people," Black said. "Matlacha is a very cool place."

Those who attend can expect to feel the music that they are coming to hear.

"The music that I offer is very emotional, so if you are looking for something real and you can feel, you will find it there," Black said. "We are hoping everyone will come out and spend an evening with us."

North Carolina native Matt Hill will also perform at Bert's May 15 and 16, at 7:30 p.m. He began playing the guitar when he was 12 years old and released his debut album, "On the Floor," in September 2012, which won the award for the Best New Artist Debut at the Blues Music Awards.
