To the editor:
I am one of those islanders that is wary of Cape Coral purchasing land in Matlacha. What is wrong with this picture? Foreclosure or not there is plenty of land in the Cape they could rescue. There is always a motive behind such a deal as this. I am sure there are many properties within the city limits that would be far more reasonable and more beneficial to the citizens of Cape Coral. Look at all the golf courses in developments that have gone into neglect. Use the money to purchase them and get them up and running and the homes in the area would increase in value which would increase the tax base for the Cape.
If the property was such a good buy, I am surprised that a developer would have picked it up or the county would have looked at this investment since Matlacha is in the county, NOT the Cape. When and if the Cape tries to develop this property, they are still facing a two-lane road which may be why developers may have researched the location and didn't go after it. Look at the problem that Matlacha Isles has getting out of that subdivision onto Pine Island Road. They will also have to look to us for water from GPIWA.
No, Mr. Donnell are fears are not unfounded or premature. We like our town the way it is and that is why we live here under county rule not yours.
