To the editor:
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Lee County, this letter addresses an inaccurate mailing piece distributed by the Families for Freedom and Fairness. The mailing piece stated that the League of Women Voters of Lee County supports the hybrid form of government promoted by the Families for Freedom and Fairness. As of this date, we have never been asked our opinion on this matter, nor have we given our endorsement as implied, hence our concern to see our organization noted thereon.
Please be advised that:
1) LWVLC did not authorize the use of our name.
2) LWV-Florida did not authorize the use of their name.
3) Yes, we do have a position in support of single-member districts.
4) No, we have not studied and come to a consensus on this proposed hybrid form of government. Hence, the LWVLC has no position on this initiative BUT we encourage our members and all citizens to participate in the campaign of their choosing.
The League of Women Voters of Lee County is a deliberative body. We are able to support organizations with similar views after fully communicating with them about the circumstances in which our organization's name will be used. We want to make it clear that we support the concept of single-member districts but do not have a position on this proposed Charter Amendment. If it actually comes to a vote of the citizens and in the interest of educating the public, we would be willing to host forums on the topic. Such forums, of course, should present both sides of the issue in an objective manner.
Clara Anne Graham, President
League of Women Voters of Lee County
