To the editor:
I would like to express our deepest gratitude for our Pine Island Firefighters, Bayshore Firefighters, Division of Forestry and the Red Cross, who were called on March 28 at 5:30 pm. to work the fire that was started on Cristi Way in Bokeelia.
Some of the Pine Island Firefighters are our friends and neighbors. And we were sure glad to see them. They responded very quickly. They worked very hard to save our house and our neighbors. So, thank you for doing such a great job.
My husband and I live on Game Bird Lane. We own and operate Pine Island Tropicals Nursery. We are located east of where the fire started. Due to the prevailing coastal winds, the fire moved towards us very quickly. The fire burned 18 acres. Unfortunately our business was not as lucky as our house. We lost eight acres of our property.
Sadly the fire probably could have been preventable had the owner of the welding business taken the time to think about where he was cutting the steal. Maybe we all should think twice about what we are doing outside on grass when we are having such dry weather. Because not only does your mistake affect you but also your neighbors.
We have lived here on Pine Island since 1980. We have been very fortunate to have such a small community to come together to help us in our time of need. We would like to thank everyone.
