The headline caught my eye: "Test Takes Risk Out of Dyeing." Of course, I don't dye my hair, but the headline seemed to make good sense. Who wants to dye and not get the result they hoped for?
A letter written from the Greenville County, S.C., Department of Social Services said: "Your food stamps will be stopped effective immediately because we have received notice that you passed away. Thank you for your attention to this matter. You may reapply if there is any change in your circumstances."
Easter is the good news that since Jesus had that kind of "change of circumstance," we also will change our dying circumstances. As Mary Magdalene stood in the garden and heard Jesus call her name, she made a discovery that would change her life forever. She discovered that by the power of God, Christ had risen and brings with Him the promise of life everlasting. She discovered that she could die and get the result she hoped for! Soon afterward, the disciples knew that no matter what dismal Emmaus road they would travel that God would accompany them. Very soon the entire world learned that Jesus took the risk out of dying because He came to bring life, and life more abundantly (Jn. 10:10).
A husband's wife had a cat that he despised. That cat was always under his feet, always tearing up the furniture, always leaving cat hair all over. Finally, one weekend when his wife was away, the man took the cat out on the lake and drowned it. When his wife returned, she was in hysterics when she couldn't find her cat. So to comfort her, he took out an ad in the newspaper and offered a $1,000 reward for anyone finding the cat. A friend hearing about the man's offer, said: "May, you have to be crazy. $1,000 for that cat and you didn't even like it!" The man just smiled and replied: "When you know what I know, you can afford to take the risk."
There is only one way to take the risk out of living and dying. And that is act on what you know. On Easter, the headline from the Jerusalem Gazette reads: "Christ takes the Risk Out of Dying." Therefore, let your alleluias thunder because Christ defeated Sin, Satan and Death. He is risen! Alleluia!
