Shilpi Somaya Gowda's

"Secret Daughter"

1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26

This is an emotional and powerful story about the treatment of women and baby girls in India. The story tells of the aftereffects of Asha growing up in America, finding her true identity. It moves forward in time from 1984 to 2009, and is told from the viewpoints of the three main female characters, Somer, Kavita, and Asha.

All are women with strong feelings about motherhood. In addition, each woman sees a different India and comes to appreciate the Country in different ways even as they realize that "Mother India does not love all her children equally." Gowda offers vivid descriptions of the contrasts and contradictions of modern India, rife with the themes that lend themselves to discussion, such as cultural identity, adoption and women's roles.
