To the editor:
Once again, a long-time Pine Island business stepped up to help out in a time of disaster. One of the many calls received on that tragic "Friday the 13th" of January was from John Honc, with Honc Marine/Demolition. John offered the demolition of the burned chamber building for the cost of "a thank you, media write up and photographs" of the demolition. On Monday, March 19, this was fulfilled, as the Honc demolition team started and completed the demolition and clean up in less than 8 hours. Reporters from the Pine Island Eagle, WINK-TV, FOX4, NBC2 and the News-Press were on hand to witness the work, and coverage appeared in each of these media that day or the following day.
John and your crew, we at the chamber cannot thank you enough for your generosity to us and to the entire community for removing this eyesore and ugly reminder of Jan. 13. To me, having never observed a demolition of a structure, it was amazing how quickly the building, its burned contents and the foundations could be removed, leaving a clean, smooth base upon which a new Chamber Welcome Center can be erected. Although we are still operating our Welcome Center out of a temporary facility, the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce is moving forward with plans for a new, permanent structure to serve our businesses and visitors.
John and the entire Honc team, thank you.
Executive Director of Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce
