How to have enough support to go around

March 8, 2012
Pine Island Eagle

To the Editor:

Those of us who live and work on Pine Island or Matlacha are very aware of the generosity the different volunteer organizations contribute to our needy island neighbors and others causes. It is my understanding that each organization must register with the Chamber of Commerce the date and purpose of its event. Historically each organization is entitled to one event a year with most events being held during the winter months so our seasonal residents can participate

I have discovered this registration process is being abused with several organizations not registering and also exceeding the one event a year.

Existing businesses are being bombarded with requests to contribute to the point where the businesses might have to say "No I cannot afford to contribute to so many requests anymore." Enough is enough. If each organization has one event a year then everyone wins. I do not have a business on the island. These are comments I have heard either from solicitors or business owners. We must work to be more accommodating to our fellow fund-raisers and work to share the calendar.
