Vincent Jerome Honc, 83, of Bokeelia passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012.
He was born eldest son Oct. 8, 1928, to Ludmila (Sushil) and Vincent Joseph on the family homestead in Bokeelia where he spent his childhood with his eight siblings. After graduating from St. Leo Boarding School for Boys in St. Leo, Fla., he returned home to Pine Island to help with the family nursery. He was later drafted in 1950 into the Army and served honorably in the infantry as a mortar instructor during the Korean War and later enlisted into the Army Reserve where he remained until 1956. While serving in 1955, he entered into partnership with his father and brother and formed Honc's Nursery, a plant and tree nursery in Bokeelia which he continued to operate until 2001.
As a lifetime resident of Bokeelia, he regularly attended services at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, served as a fire commissioner for the Pine Island Fire Department, was a director and officer in the Lee County Conservation Association and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his two loving sisters, Elizabeth Himschoot and Sr. Kathleen Francis of New York, and dear brother, John Sr.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Lois.
A visitation was held Monday, Feb. 20, at Coral Ridge Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1630 Pine Island Road, in Cape Coral. A funeral mass was held at Tuesday at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, 12175 Stringfellow Road in Bokeelia, followed by military honors and Christian burial at Coral Ridge Funeral Home and Cemetery.
