Please take part in school district’s community survey

February 22, 2012
By Dr. Joseph P. Burke - Superintendent for Lee County Schools , Pine Island Eagle

Friends of Lee County Public Schools:

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with a quick update on the Community Survey that is currently underway in our District.

As you probably know, we are conducting an in-depth survey in order to garner input on a variety of education topics in Lee County. We're working to gauge public sentiment on how well we're doing in preparing today's students for tomorrow's world as well as what type of student assignment model best fits for our District and how we can make parental involvement easier in today's world.

The goal is to reach as many parts of our community as possible which is why we've offered both an online and hard-copy option to participate in the survey. And we're working to spread the word and copies of the survey across our county in a multitude of ways (E-mails, guest editorials, direct mailings and more.)

Preliminary numbers show people are responding nearly 4,000 online responses and around 1,000 hard copies have been turned in so far. But we still have the rest of February to go the last day to participate is Wednesday, February 29th.

Given we have a couple weeks left, I wanted to bring some more attention to the project and encourage those of you who may not have taken the survey to please do so before the end of the month.

Everyone is affected in one way or another by our District and that makes your views on how well we're doing important. We all have a voice, and it's vital that you make yours heard. The data that is gathered via this survey will play an important part in the decision making process for our District in the months and years to come.

Public education must continue to evolve and change with the times that includes everything from new teaching methods to implementing emerging academic programs (i.e. STEM) to the continued integration of technology into the classrooms.

Our District is on a positive path academically, and while there are some challenges that continue to face us, we are working hard to meet them head on.

If you have participated in the survey, I would like to thank you on behalf of the 10,000 plus employees and 83,000 plus students in our schools. If you haven't yet taken the survey, I would encourage you to do so after all, the public school system is your school system, and your opinion matters.

To submit an online version, visit our Web site ( and look for the huge, red button on the main page. If you'd like a hard-copy, please visit any one of our public schools or the District's main office (2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.) Once you fill out the hard-copy survey you can return it to any public school or the District office (you don't have to bring it back to the same location from where you received it.)

Make your voice heard it's important today and in the years to come.
