An antique boutique that opened in Matlacha on Halloween last year has seen a big increase in sales since the beginning of the month.
Keepsakes Antique Boutique Owner Angel Hill said she decided to open the store because she has always been a collector. When her collection got to the point where it began to overtake her four-bedroom home in Cape Coral, she decided it was time to open the store in Matlacha.
"The people on the island are wonderful," she said, adding that she has seen a few regular customers who check out the inventory of the store frequently. "We are getting really good feedback. I am grateful for the community so far."
When she first opened Keepsakes, she said it was important to look for things that were different, so she would not step on anyone's toes that also sold antiques on the island.
Hill said her son and husband travel all over to attend auctions to look for things that are unusual, unique and antique, while she runs the store with her daughter-in-law. She said they do not always buy the items that they are looking at because it may not turn out to be what they want.
"If we get it at a good buy, we pass it on," she said about the price for her customers. "We want to keep it reasonable."

Hill said the value of a collectible is what people are willing to pay for the it.
Although they do not look for specifics, Hill offers a watch list for her customers. She said if her customers come in looking for an item she does not carry, she will add it to the list. Her husband and son will take that list with them to the auction to try to find the item.
"They are not obligated to buy it," Hill said if the customer does not like the item or price. "We won't sell until they have a chance to say yes or no."
Due to her son and husband traveling on a weekly basis, the inventory of the store is forever changing. She said if she sold a piece of furniture, she would have to rearrange the store to put something new in its place.
"It's always changing," Hill said. "There is always new stuff being brought in. You never know what will be in here."
She encourages everyone to stop by the boutique to check out what they have, and enjoy the antique items.
