To the Editor:
Salvation Army thanks Pine Islanders who volunteer their time and money at Christmas and throughout the year.
Jerry and Cathy Flesher each year contacts Pine Islanders to ring the bell at the Salvation Army kettle in front of Winn Dixie. For the past 10 years churches such as United Methodist Church of Pine Island including the Emmaus men and women's groups. Also, the Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church; St. John's Episcopal Church, Pine Island Community Church and Baptists Churches. Service organizations such as Lions, Kiwanis and Rotary. Banks such as SunTrust and Wells Fargo give their employees time off to ring the Salvation Army bell.
The Matlacha Hookers have filled hundreds of Christmas stockings with toys and games. Also, other boxes of clothing during the years. Cindee Tolliver of Traders Hitching Post has collected the Matlacha Hookers' stockings. Cindee has in her shop a small Salvation Army Kettle where she collects year round donations $66 this year.
Leona Lovegrove's Gallery each year has displayed and housed the Salvation Army Kettle for donations and has helped with other Salvation Army programs. Beacon of H.O.P.E. donations are year-round for health and beauty products. These are for the battered women and homeless women and children housed at the Salvation Army in Fort Myers. We can use these donations year round if others have them.
Pine Islanders civic and service organizations and the Salvation Army owe a special salute to Winn Dixie for space year round. Manager Dan Walker not only offers space but food donations and bakery items and food to charitable and church groups weekly. Thank you, Dan, you have been a good friend to Pine Islanders.
I am sure I have missed some other groups. Please call me Helen O'Rourke McClary at 239-283-3009 or stop by the Dolls' House at 4666 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, FL 33993.
We all thank Pine Island Eagle for helping all of us with out projects.
