Everyone should be safe around island’s bike paths

December 21, 2011
Pine Island Eagle

To the Editor:

I realize this has been addressed in the Eagle previously but the situation continues to be a safety issue.

This letter is for the gentleman riding his bicycle on the bike path near Myers Lane in St. James City recently. I apologize for our near collision. It frightened me as much as you. Please remember, however, that those of us approaching the bike lane from side roads often can only see a few feet of the bike path until the front of our vehicle is well into the path of approaching walkers or bikers. Careful drivers creep into the bike path so bikers can see us even if we can't see them. We all (drivers, bikers, walkers) need to take responsibility for everyone's safety. Don't rely on drivers to see you first.

Barb Darling

St. James City
