Dr. Leticia Acosta has joined the staff at Riverdale Dental Associates again.

"I began working as a dental hygienist at Riverdale in 2004," explains Dr. Leticia Acosta. "I had been a dentist in Cuba but my credits from my education there only qualified me to become a dental hygienist in the United States."

Working with Dr. (Markus) Sherry and his staff was what inspired Dr. Acosta to become a dentist here in the states.

Dr. Leticia Acosta performs a dental procedure on patient Bruce Collett. “It didn’t hurt a bit,” he said.

"His care of his patients, his philosophy about what being a dentist is all about, he became like a mentor to me," she said.

Dr. Acosta made the decision to enroll in the University of Florida in Gainesville in 2007 and received her DMD this year.

"I wanted to come back to Riverdale here on Pine Island because of the patients. They are open minded and appreciate when you take the time to really get to know and help them. For instance, many older people take medications that make their mouths very dry. They think there is nothing that can be done but the philosophy here at Riverdale is to make the effort to ensure total wellness of our patients. If we notice something, we ask the patient about it and try to offer a solution."

One thing Dr. Acosta particularly wants to help her patients with is quitting smoking.

"It is so bad for your health in so many ways, so if a patient decides to quit, I assure them I will be with them every step of the way."

While most of Dr. Acosta's patients are adults, she enjoys working with children.

"They can be a little frightened, but I show them all the instruments I will use, let them hold them and explain exactly what I will be doing. It is important to start children off with a good dentistry experience so they will make good oral hygiene a priority throughout their lives."

Dr. Acosta plans to stay at Riverdale for a long time.

"My patients are very loyal," she explains. "I think they like that I am open to listening to them and am flexible with each patient's personal situation. And it is nice to be back with my friends I worked with when I was a hygienist."

Riverdale Dentistry Associates is at 10484 Stringfellow Road, Suite 3, in St. James City.
