Joyce Marie (Rowley, Olson) Covey

April 19, 2011
Pine Island Eagle

Joyce Marie (Rowley, Olson) Covey, 83, of Bokeelia, born Feb. 20, 1928, in Jamestown, NY to the late Harold and Lillian M (Sederquist) Rowley, died April 9, 2011 at Hope Hospice of Cape Coral.

Joyce graduated from Jamestown High School in the class of 1946. After her youngest child went to school, Joyce went to work at Sears Service on Allen Street, and then moved to the Sears store in Chautauqua Mall, where she worked in furniture sales until her retirement 23 years ago.

In 1997, Joyce decided to try being a “snowbird,” renting from a friend on Pine Island. Six weeks later, she bought a house on the same street, so she could return each year. She loved the island so much she decided to move permanently in 1998, as long as at least one child moved with her. Two of them did, and a third followed in 2003.

With the move, she was able to enjoy her favorite pastime, gardening, year-round. She also loved all of the shopping, restaurants, and leisure activities available in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area. She became a fan of the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #1843 in St. James City, Florida and former member of the Herman Kent Unit 777 American Legion Auxiliary in Celoron, transferring to Pine Island Post 136 American Legion Auxiliary in St. James City, Florida.

Joyce is survived by four children: Lynne (Jim) Myers, of Bokeelia, FL; Larry (Sylvia) Olson, of Plantation, FL; Wendy Tompsett, with whom she made her home; and Sallie Olson, of Celoron, NY, nine grandchildren: Melissa Myers, Marla Myers, Mark Myers, Michael Lewis, Michelle Lewis, Mitchell Olson, Maclean (Mickey) Olson, Matthew Olson, and Jeffrey Carlson, and eight great-grandchildren: Mason Lange, Morgan Myers, Skylar Myers, Ethan Lundy, Jasmine Lewis, Dylan Lewis, Jacob Green and Kyle Green, and many nieces and nephews

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her two husbands, Roy E. Olson and Arthur Covey; her siblings: Jane (Dan) Zollner, Robert (Doe) Rowley, and William (Marge) Rowley.

The family would like to thank RC and Mary, her neighbors and daytime caregivers, for enabling her to spend all but her last few days at home in familiar surroundings. Words cannot express the comfort that gave her.

A memorial service will be held at the Hope Hospice Chapel on Diplomat Parkway in Cape Coral, Florida on April 30, 2011 at 11 a.m., with reception to follow on at the Pine Island Loyal Order of The Moose, Lodge #1954. An additional memorial to be held in the Jamestown, New York area will be announced by family at a later date.

Arrangements by Affordable Cremations, A Dignified Alternative.

Donations may be made in Joyce’s memory for Hope Hospice or a charity of your choice.
