Pine Island American Legion Post 136

August 18, 2009
Pine Island Eagle

To the Editor:

Our Post is located at 4106 Stringfellow Road, St. James City, Fla. The phone number is 283-4434 and we are at the south end of Pine Island.

On Oct. 4, 1980, our post received its permanent charter. There were 52 members at the first meeting with three paid for life. From its beginning the post has grown to its present day membership of 595 members of which 45 are life members and still growing. Since its charter, the legion has added the following groups to its family.

The Ladies Auxiliary was chartered on March 6, 1981, and has grown steadily to its present membership of 437. The Sons of the Legion was chartered on Oct. 6, 1983, and also has grown to its present membership of 214. The newest member of our family is the Legion Riders and was chartered in Oct. of 2008 with 40 members.

From the first commander of the legion, Luke Iler, to its present day commander, Joe Vallee, we have had many men who have held that office, some have held the position for one year and others for numerous years. Through the years, these men and others who served in different positions, plus our active membership have dedicated their time and effort to make this post one of the most respected and looked up to in the district and state. There have been some problems in the past, but with the help of the Ladies Auxiliary and SAL, we have worked our way through them and now with our new member, the Legion Riders, we should be stronger than ever.

We are a very generous post and with the help of all the members, we donate to a variety of worthy causes both on and off the island. It is not all work, we have plenty of diverse entertainment for all, also dinners, dances and fun activities to raise money. The lounge area is a favorite spot for the members and guests to meet and indulge in their favorite adult beverage while solving world problems.

If yo feel you would like to join the legion or the auxiliary, SAL or the Legion Riders, stop by and get an application to see if you qualify, or call me at 283-3563. You could become a part of the largest veterans organization in the world. It is a very satisfying experience helping others through these groups.
