Charles O. Wainright Jr. 83, of Fort Myers died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009. He was born in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1925 to Charles Sr. and Virginia Wainright. He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served in World War II and Korea. He was the recipient of three Purple Hearts and one Bonze Star. He also served as a personal body guard to Gen. George Patton.
He was a graduate of the University of Florida where he received his doctorate. He worked for the Lee County School Board for over 35 years. During his career he served as principal of Edison Park Elementary and Sanibel Elementary. He was well known for his secret recipe for smoked mullet.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; three sons, Charles Wainright III and Frank Pepper Wainright, both of Fort Myers, Keith M. Wainright of St. James City; and four grandchildren.
Private family services will be planned. Memorial contributions may be made to Lee County Animal Control.
