B&B Tackle in Matlacha has become a popular stop for area anglers over the last several years. Following the recent retirement of former proprietor, Boomer Skein, this well established Matlacha business is now owned and operated by Tom and Rose Bahley.

"Years ago, I told Boomer if he ever wanted to sell the business to call me first, so when he decided to retire, I jumped at the opportunity," said Bahley. "I have always loved Matlacha and couldn't wait to move here permanently, and the bonus is getting to sell fishing tackle. It's more like fun than work."

The couple purchased the business on Dec. 24. They agreed that business is picking up primarily due to the line of products they offer their customers.

Tom and Rose Bahley recently took over the operation of B&B Tackle located in the Olde Fish House Marina in Matlacha.

"We are working toward becoming a one-stop shop for our area fishermen," Bahley said. "We listen to our customers and are trying our best to fill their every need."

B&B Tackle carries top brand fishing rods and reels, including Shimano, Penn, Daiwa, Okuma, Red Bone and Quantum, as well as lures and other tackle geared for area fish species. Using primarily local distributors, Bahley also said that he will take special orders.

"If you don't see it in the shop, we can get it for you. Because most of our distributors are local, we can usually promise a 72-hour turn around for special orders. All they need to do is come in an browse our catalogues to find the items they are looking for," Bahley said. "We also can line up charters for our customers as well. We have several charter captains that we work with and depending on the fishing style and the type of fish the customer wants to catch, we can pair them up with the right captain for the job."

Bahley also said he listens carefully to his customers, and for those new to the area, he often can offer advice as to what is biting and where on any given day.

"While I can help with advice, I still can't promise the fisherman will be successful. After all, that's why they call it fishing and not catching, but our best resource is our local fishermen and charter captains," said Bahley.

In addition to hard bait, B&B also carries live and frozen bait as well.

"When it comes to baits, we keep a supply of shrimp and pinfish year round, and during tarpon season we will have live crabs as well," he said. "As for frozen baits, we usually have cut baits like squid and herring in stock as well as chum."

B&B also carries fishing hats and accessories, navigational charts, fish identification charts and rod and reel rentals.

B&B Tackle is located at 4530 Pine Island Rd., in Matlacha. For more information, call the store at 283-8302.
