| | 2007 Cupcake California Cabernet SauvignonJuly 9, 2010 - Norman Bentley#26-10-PIE I love big, hearty, and robust Cabernet Sauvignon, but when the summer temperatures reach the mid 90's and above, its time for a little milder version of my favorite grape. I recently sampled the 2007 Cupcake Cabernet Sauvignon and found it to be delightful for consuming on a hot summer night.
The wine has rich Cabernet flavors and mild tannins which come across as fulfilling without being overwhelming. There are distinct flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and a nuance of currant. The finish is clean, and has a flirtation with the oak, without asserting itself . This wine would pair well with fillet mignon, but would be even better with a big, thick, pork loin chop cooked on the grill.
The Cupcake, like many California Cabernet Sauvignons these days, is a blend. It has 89%, Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Syrah, 2% Petite Sirah, and 2% Merlot. The alcohol level comes in at 13.7%. Norm's score on the Cupcake Cabernet Sauvignon would be an 87.
