2010 Lunneli Montefalco Rosso

May 13, 2016 - Norman Bentley

The blended red wines from Tuscany called Super Tuscans have become quite sought after in the marketplace, and are usually a combination of the Italian grape Sangiovese, and French grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The price is usually a little prohibitive, so a wine of that nature is quite welcomed at a more affordable price. This Montefalco Rosso is a blend of the Italian Sagrantino and Sangiovese, along with the French Cabernet and Merlot which are grown in Montefalco to the north of Tuscany.

The Lunelli Ziggurat Montefalco Rosso is a polished and complex blend of these grapes which produces a luxurious wine in the twenty dollar range. The nose is full of cherry and blackberry and shines against the wines brilliant cherry red color. The flavor is complex with blackberry at the center surrounded by plum, cherry, and a bit of spice. The wine has a strong finish, and a lingering taste with firm tannins, which suggest that the wine has additional years to mature in the bottle, but is quite accessible at the moment. Norm's score is 89.

We enjoyed the Ziggurat with a juicy, burnt medium rare New York Strip and a fresh tomato and avocado salad, and it was delightful. This wine would also be great with a big platter of Mussels Marinara.

price : $17- $20

score: 89
