Pine Island Loves Art
February 9, 2010 - Nancy Koucky
Come to Matlacha and Pine Island for a fabulous and fun weekend of Art, Music, Food and People. It is truly an “Art Lovers Weekend “ ( “Lovers of Art Weekend”??) , and oh yes, it just happens to be Valentine’s Day! So give yourself and those you love a gift of fun and leisure – wander the galleries, specialty shops and restaurants in Matlacha and the Island and fall in love with all that is Pine Island.
This weekend is comfort food for the soul. It is a place to enjoy some of what I think are the finer points of Pine Island all marvelously squeezed together into one weekend. From my perspective Pine Island attracts creative, interesting, intelligent, free-spirited, outside-of-the-box people. Art Lovers Weekend celebrates all of this.
Visual artists will not only be showing their works of art, but will be demonstrating their talents -- this is an underappreciated endeavor. They must pack up, not only their artwork, but a portion of their own private studio to take it on the road to share with others the processes of their creations. Stop by their tent, perhaps learn something new, then step back and realize that the act of sharing their creativity is a wonderful treat. Venture on out to the island where there will be opportunities to dig in and be creative yourself if the spirit moves you to do so.
Dance (or just tap your foot if you are shy) to the live music filling the skies of Pine Island all day long -- great voices, great poetry in song. Don’t forget the food! Fresh local seafood to ice cream -- allow yourself some extra calories.
A people watchers feast of fine specimens putting their creative side forward fill the streets of Matlacha. Tourists, seasonal residents, Pine Islanders, artists, art admirers and connoisseurs, food and music lovers, all mingle in the energy of this artsy weekend. And yes, that synergy can cause some traffic snarls … remember the “squeezed together” part I mentioned before?
If you are among the unfortunate , who for whatever reason, are unable to attend but must battle the traffic that sometimes clogs Pine Island Road on this weekend of fun, I ask you to take a couple of deep breaths. Reflect on this as a relatively small inconvenience that goes along with the true loveliness of an island that supports and welcomes people who give us art, music, poetry and culinary delights -- and welcomes too, those that enjoy its artist’s bounties. We are fortunate to live here --- so for this weekend and others that celebrate our island lifestyle, I guess we just need to be careful when we cross the road, and allow ourselves a bit of extra time and patience to drive through “downtown Matlacha”. The police and fire departments are aware, vigilant and patient with us --many thanks to them for keeping it safe to have this fulfilling weekend.
To get a comprehensive list of island activities for this Valentines Weekend, pick up the Pine Island Eagle (the paper one) or explore this website later in the week. Or, if all else fails, stop by and see me, I’ll talk your ears off about all the great things to experience here on Pine Island!
